(pretty please r.s.v.p on time. mwah...)
Diorama-O-Rama is a collective art happening and fundraiser. Everyone is invited and encouraged to make and donate a diorama to our silent auction with 100 percent of the proceeds going to our Dallas friend Justin who, for many months, has been displaced from working and living in his Oak Cliff home and is instead living in Bethesda, Maryland, where he is undergoing cutting-edge treatments to kick some cancer butt! Read his very personal experiences with cancer.
What is a diorama?
It’s a world in a box that’s made however you like. There are no size restrictions, no theme restrictions, and no real rules at all. All dioramas will be displayed outside, so come prepared if your diorama requires special supplies (batteries, extension cords, etc).

Took my girlfriend Diana+ out on the town last weekend. Was so excited to show her off that when Kevin helped me load the film, before I read the directions, I completely overlooked inserting the square that determines the image format—hence the blurry, overlaying. And I overexposed. And I underexposed. The final results are in, and they are not pretty, to everyone. But it's a start.
I am totally smitten with local writer/commentator Rawlins Gilliland. You may have recently heard his amusing banter upstage KERA pledge drive cohost Jeff Whittington, Think's Senior Producer and host of Anything You Ever Wanted to Know, between airings of Willie’s story “Nelson: An Epic Life.” If so, you’ll want to read this hot piece, “A Foodie’s Guide to Dallas Street Food.” And then you must read his responses to this post. He makes me happy to be a Texan.

It got cold up in here, up in here. Okay so, this isn't our house; OBVS.
But our house is now brrrrrr cold! On another note, I sure miss me
some Boston blizzards. Right this moment in Boston it's 56. Right
this moment in Dallas it's 72. And inside our house it's...uhhh...
72. Dudes, that is weird. I guess I should turn the air off? Hmm. The
inside of our house waaas like 84 about an hour ago. Zzzzzzzzzzzz.
HOME HELPER
Friends, my dad tipped me off on an AMAZING air/heating repair man IN DALLAS named Adrian Andrews. He is soooooo RAD. He stopped by at 8:45 p.m. tonight...AFTER WORK...and fixed our cold-air issue for a very very fair price. He was in and out within 30 minutes. Email me at holly [at] hollyjefferson [dot] com if you need his telephone number. Whenever I find cool people that can master home repairs at a decent price, I'll post them under Home Renovation Tips. Holla if you've already lucked out on someone like that. I'll try to make that category link a drive by destination for names and numbers. Can't make any promises.
That is all. I am going to enjoy MAYJAHLY cold air now. Aaaaaaand, scene.
Since it’s Earth Day, why not plant a balcony garden with some veggies or fruit? Eat when ripe, preserve for an out-of-season treat. And with more people moving back into Downtown Dallas, and since we lack co-op public gardens within the CBD, city dwellers need to know that even apartment living is garden-able. You don’t even need a balcony, just some sunny windows!
Tonight, Sarah Gardner from Texas Discovery Gardens will give a lesson on how to cultivate a container garden for your apartment or loft. Learn tips and tricks for an easy-and-organic garden that doesn't require a green thumb and get the scoop on houseplants that will clean your indoor air.

This is the fabulous John Paul, mostly photographed by Kurt (seen with JP on bottom right). John Paul can kick real high, make camera-ready faces, bust out with fearless non sequiturs, warm himself by the fire in rather individualistic fashion, and won't ever trick you into thinking he is a Vietnamese translator for the airline industry—unlike someone we know. And this is just the beginning of why he wins my prestigious The Happy Monday title. Makes sense to you, right?

Oak Cliff Earth Day
Sunday, April 20 | 11 a.m. to to 5 p.m.
Geez! I so spaced out on posting this a few days earlier. Sorreez. The second annual Oak Cliff Earth Day is going down this Sunday at historic Lake Cliff Park. Me and my man went last year and it was so so so much fun, so very well attended, and so very neighborhoody cute. I highly recommend riding your bike there if possible.
A variety of foreign and domestic hybrid cars and trucks will be on display along with information about efforts to bring the streetcars back to Oak Cliff. Exhibitors will present information on community gardens, worm farming, tree planting, and butterflies. Beekeepers will show you how to safely host a bee hive in your back yard. There will be a variety of plants for sale from the Native Texas Plant Society, Friends of Oak Cliff Parks, Rainbow Garden Club, and numerous other garden clubs. Organic gardening clubs, organic food co-ops, and organic farmers will be in attendance. Many local non-profit groups will also have information booths. There will also be a booth to recycle cell phones to benefit the group "Recycle to Erdicate Poverty". There will be food, drinks and art for sale. Over 20 artists will be participating in the art show and there will be live music and dance performances throughout the day.

Green Apple Festival
12 p.m. to ?? p.m.
The Music Hall at Fair Park
909 First Ave
I'm too tired to put a personal spin on the Modern Luxury editorial shout per their Hot List email. But I feel I must pimp ANYTHING happening at Fair Park other than the fair since Fair Park is awesome and the city seems to keep giving it the shaft. And if it includes a mention of the lukewarm, Los Lonely Boys, at least there's also a mention of Junior Brown. Washington D.C. got waaay more lucky with its lineup of acts. Dang, y'all. And one more thing, couldn't the Fair Park folks have given event organizers a less swampy image? Compare it photos of other host cities and you'll agree that someone should be ashamed of themselves.
"It's hip to be green so jump on the eco-bandwagon and head to Fair Park for the Green Apple Music Festival. This Earth Day celebration serves up music and eco-awareness with eight events at landmark locations across the U.S. (Central Park, Santa Monica Pier). The Dallas fest features performances by Junior Brown, Los Lonely Boys, and Martin Sexton. Also check out the "Green Apple Venues" participating throughout the weekend (Granada Theater, House of Blues). How do you like them apples?"
BTW. Coincidence this event is on 4.20?
Quick's Big Thing | Dallas Music Awards Showcase

What is Quick’s Big Thing? It’s a free concert and awards show to celebrate local music. On April 24, 10 awards will be given out at the Palladium Ballroom. The local-music panelists (meet them here) selected the nominees. You can have a say, too. Place your votes here.

Good Records turned 8 years old on February 7. How very logical for them to celebrate on National Record Store Day—and ain't that just the biggest section of your local card shop? What to give? Record needles? Def not a gift card to iTunes. Your prescence will be presents enough. Don't forget to shop, too. Happy birthday to a store that survives in a suffering business.

Friends of Tandy Hills Natural Area
The 3rd Annual Fort Worth Prairie Fest
Saturday, April 26 | 11 a.m. to 8 p.m.
The fest was originally designed to bring attention to Tandy Hills in order to help protect it from gas drilling and to encourage the City of Fort Worth to take better care of it. Last year 3,000 people attended. Twice as many are expected this year, if the weather cooperates. This free event has a green theme, with booths offering information about native-plant gardening, recycling and composting, and vendors displaying sustainable-living housewares. Speakers will include "Dirt Doctor" Howard Garrett, and Brave Combo and the Mondo Drummers will do their best to make the occasion lively.
Look. 33 cents is not technically FREE but whatever. I throw pennies away because they suck. Lucky for us our local Baskin-Robbins, at Kiest and Hampton, is pretty much right across the street. So when I dip, you dip, we dip. You got over a week to collect enough change for this to count as free.
Treat Your Group To A Scoop
31-Cent Scoop Night at Baskin Robbins
Wednesday, April 30 | 5 p.m. to 10 p.m.
Thanks to my friend Gretel via Mari I had this Starbucks Gift Card sitting on my desk this morning. Basically it entitles the cardholder to get a Tall Pike Place Roast every Wednesday through May 28, 2008. And since there is no barcode and no place to punch or sign, you can get free coffee all day if you want. Here's the hitch: the gift card was enclosed USA Today's "Money Section" on Tuesday, April 8. Maybe you can still get your hands on one. Maybe they were in other local papers, too. I got a cup today and it was pretty good. FIND ONE OF THESE and get wired:

I really have no idea what this is about but, it's FREE. And the flier makes me laugh.
Saturday, April 12 | 2 p.m. | Park in the Woods | 6801 Mountain Creek Pkwy | 75249

So, it's not really free, like, free free. Sorry. It's really more under the guise of "donations appreciated." If you have never taken a class with Chinook, he is one cool cat. It's the total mind, body, and soul kind of experience I totally hippie out to. Each and every Sunday Chinook teaches Yoga Underground. If the weather is nice, he leaves his Tsada studio homebase in the South Side on Lamar and takes his class somewhere nice outdoors. Here's the haps for this Sunday: it's all levels of flow and beginners are welcome. See you there.

Until I see a certificate from the freaking Guinness World Records, I'm calling b.s. on it being the world's largest. At least it's not called the "First Annual...". I love when people do that. This garage sale fills over 50,000 square feet in Grand Place, across from the Old Mill Restaurant. Proceeds benefit the Choir and Orchestra from First Baptist Church of Dallas. FREE PARKING, of course. I'm hoping to score some taxidermy.

Nancy, George and Bess | Artist Reception
Tonight, April 3rd | 7 to 9 | 2824 Main St., Deep Ellum
Nancy, George and Bess, curated and produced by Sarah Jane Semrad and Erica Felicella, is an exhibit that features local women artists working in all media and in all stages of their career. Named after the three lead female figures in Carolyn Keene's Nancy Drew series, Nancy, George and Bess encapsulates Dallas' own female talent in a cool Deep Ellum property, located at 2824 Main in Deep Ellum as a part of the Deep Ellum Arts Festival. From artists to have never had a show to artists who are collected widely, Nancy, George and Bess allows all stages and ages to emerge and share the same gallery space. Confirmed artists: Zanne Hochberg, Angela Faz, Erica Felicella, Andrea Roberts, Jayme Nourallah, Ryann Rathbone, Kate Nelson, Kim Cadmus Owens, Alison Welsh and Cathey Miller.
And, if my memory serves me right, you might even see my man and yours truly in a certain set of photographs by Andrea Roberts. Cool.
I have a broken microwave and jambox I need to unload. After listening to a report on NPR last week I realized I could no way no how stick them in the trash. Like old cans of paint, old electronics require proper disposal, too. Donna Harris' weekly newsletter, InTownDallas, tipped me on such a service. Do it.
Per the newsletter: They’ll take CPU's,Printers/Copiers, Land & Cell Phones, Monitors, Fax Machines, Game Machines, Laptops, Scanners, Media Equipment, Main Frames, Keyboards/Mice, Video/CD Players, VHS Tapes & CDs, Net Working Equipment, Cables/Wires, Fluorescent Lights and batteries. For a slight charge of $5 or so, they will take televisions, monitors and what not now that are getting harder to recycle.

Sat, April 5 | 12 to 4
Dear Main Street Walker,
It was drag walking behind you and your burning cigarette as I made my way to the parking garage after work yesterday. Since I've never smoked it was easy to pick up my pace to get around you and not inhale your second hand fumes—an easy task for anyone, really. But what you did next was mind blowing. I can say that I, and the other five guys that were in the elevator of our parking garage, were APPALLED when you, an adult, reached into your bag, pulled out a bottle of cheap parfum, and spritzed it on yourself FIVE TIMES while telling a person at the other end of your cell phone, "I KNOW! It's the first one I had all day." Unlike the other elevator riders, I wasn't able to get my camera phone out fast enough to snap a shot and text my friends about you. But next time I see you, I'll be ready. And I'll make sure you come with a warning sign, too.
Scared of scents and smoke in small spaces,
H

Easter in the Park
Dallas Symphony Orchestra
Featuring the Pooch Parade and Costume Contest
Sunday, March 23 | 11 a.m. | Robert E. Lee Park | 3000 Turtle Creek Blvd
One of the things I missed more than good Mexican food while living in Boston was packing a picnic, meeting up with my peeps, and going to Easter in Lee Park. You have no idea how heartbroken I was over the fluke snowstorm that cancelled last year’s festivities. Bring your biggest bonnet -- and your dog if you have one -- and be part of the 12,000 people who turn out for the 23rd annual party in the park! Since I have neither a bonnet nor a dog, I’m settled for champagne, strawberries, cucumber sandwiches, and, per a long-standing tradition, many, many, many, rounds of charades. One year our friend Alexis had to act out the old television show “Simon and Simon.” She did the “sounds like” gesture, then pointed up inside her skirt, and then put her hands together and motioned like she was snapping something in half. No one ever (EVER) got her broken hymen reference. You win some you loose some.
We’ll be sitting in the same place we always sit—across the street, across the creek, near Lemmon. Holla if you want to meet up. Wearing high heels is not a good idea, unless you're a dude in pink spandex hotpants—if only I could find that photo.
Was checking a co-workers current issue of Vanity Fair and saw this new Marc Jacobs ad featuring the totally gorgeous M.I.A. My first reaction: LAME.COM. I am officially burned out on our girl, Maya. It's been reported that Kala was the most played album at all the Spring 2008 Fashion Week shows. But these ads make her look like she's been played. Here's the thing. When I see the Juergen Teller-shot ads with say, Meg White, Sofia Coppola, Cindy Sherman, or Winona Ryder, it's quite easy to picture those pretty ladies in Marc's pretty pieces. But Maya? Marketing high end fashion? I mean, it's refreshing to see ethnicity in advertising but, her real style is cooler than this—basically anything bright enough to make us wear our sunglasses at night. Not like the light brights seen here in this ad, but crazy acid brights like these. Maybe she's ready for a makeover. I guess we all have to change our clothes sometime.
