(the controversial photo seen round the world. shot by heather timmons.)
The August 08 issue of Vogue India is probably off newsstands by now, but the controversy of a particular 16-page editorial spread lives on. In case you missed it, real citizens, with a daily salary of about a buck twenty five, are featured with high dollar accessories: a $10,000+ Hermes Bikin bag, a $200 Burberry umbrella, $100 Fendi bibs. Here's the rub, people are wigging out, calling the shoot exploitative and vulgar. That's one view. I'd like to look at it like this: it celebrates the beauty of India and its people, and not a mockery of the less fortunate. While none of the subjects are personally identified, each is smiling and appear genuinely happy. I love the colors, the light, and use of space.
Vogue India's editor Priya Tanna told the New York Times that by choosing ordinary Indians over models, she wanted to show the "power of fashion" and that the shoot was saying that "fashion is no longer a rich man's privilege. Anyone can carry it off and make it look beautiful," she said.
Well no duh. Who doesn't look more beautiful when thread-bare items are replaced with runway style? Come on now, uber high fashion of this caliber is totally a rich person's sport. Now I feel divided about the whole matter. Hmm.
